Happy New Year! Making Intentions versus Resolutions

intentions versus resolutions
First and foremost, Happy New Year to you all. It’s been an exciting year full of change: fresh starts, new chapters, and also endings. But that is life and what makes life and living so grand. As we usher in the New Year, think about doing some reflection and journaling on the year past. I find so many lessons learned and unremembered accomplishments when I just take the time to look back month-to-month.

It is really quite amazing when you go into the New Year that way. You might surprise yourself: survived a break-up, got a promotion, changed homes, had a child, etc. Also, try and use the reflection to find the things you want to do better, or things you want to change – in your environment, yourself, in the world at large. Don’t be daunted, just do! Pick one thing and act. So this year, also try using the word intentions versus resolutions. It might just be semantics for some, but intention has a softer ring, where resolution sort of sets you up for failure if you can’t live up to that goal. My intentions this year are simple but strong: be kinder, be more time efficient, seek more advance yoga classes, cook more, grow my charitable and community work, and ALWAYS recycle. OK – that’s my immediate list. I did not make a resolution to lose 5 pounds and give up chocolate. So make those intentions, beYOU and be safe. Here’s to an awesome 2008!

beYOU.tv at the Mashable NYC Meetup

Two weeks ago I attended the Mashable NYC meetup at the Village Pour House in NYC’s best neighborhood - the East Village.

At the meetup Stephanie Frasco (aka Ask Frasco) was conducting interviews, powered by For Your Imagination, of new and local startups. I was lucky/bold enough to be interviewed! A big thanks to Stephanie Frasco and For Your Imagination!

Great in 2008
2008 will be bigger than 2007! We currently have two exciting developments to announce: a new radio show and a new community section.

Starting January 7th, 2008, beYOU.tv will host our own radio show on HealthyLife.net. For more information click here (scroll half way down, or search for "Bob Kasunic"). If you have any questions that you’d like to be answered on air or suggestions please send your thoughts via the feedback link on http://www.beYOU.tv.

Our new community section is going to be awesome, I’m looking forward to it the most! Similar to other social networks, you will be able to fill-out a profile. This is great for gyms (locations) and instructors (professionals) because they can advertise for free.

The way you gather information from our community section is what will set it apart. We are implementing a pull style information system, I like to think of this as a reverse search. Instead of you looking for information, the information you want comes to you - cool huh?

In our community section, you’ll be able to track or follow a location, professional, user or idea. For example, I could track East West Yoga, a Yoga studio in NYC. Whenever East West Yoga updates their profile, I will receive a notice online, on my phone or through email! Last week East West hosted an open house (free Yoga). Once our community section is up, East West could put that information on their profile, then I’d be notified - the reverse search.

Here’s another great example: tracking ideas. In the new community section I’ll be able to track ideas or phrases, such as "free pilates". Now, whenever someone updates their profile with "free pilates", I’ll be notified. I could go to all the free pilates events in New York!

As you can see, I’m excited about the new community section. Now all we have to do is build it!

To close out the year, I’d like to highlight my two favorite Friday Favorite posts.

Friday Favorites - Get a Jump on Cold and Flu Season - Winter is not over yet, don’t get sick!

Friday Favorites - New Hip Hop - because if you’ve gotta dance, you might as well look cool doing it!

Have a Happy New Year!

Don’t Let the Holidays Sabotage Your Fitness Goals

The holidays are best marked as times for togetherness, family, shared moments and reflection, not an excuse to overindulge. Thus far, I’ve spent time with family, co-workers, dear friends and neighbors. I’ve had more yummy and tempting food choices put in my face over the last week than I have all year. But when I talk to folks or hear remarks of, “Well it’s the holidays, I’ll get back on my diet after the New Year…” that always gets me. Even with richer foods, baked goods, and once a year specialties, you can still make smart eating choices. At the office, find another route past the company kitchen if that’s were goodies are left out; if you know you’re going to a party in the evening, have a light sensible lunch; before going out – pick up some celery and carrot sticks and snack on those while getting dressed; also start the evening with a white wine spritzer and try and stay clear of the egg nog. It’s also nice during the holidays to treat yourself to a healing treatment to keep the body firm and detoxed – perhaps a massage coupled with steam or sauna. Just be conscious of what you decide to indulge in. And just remember – it’s all about choices and you are in control!

Be Present — Not Just a State of Mind

Several days ago, I just expounded on the virtues of Nau, the super pc, high-performance clothing retailer, but every time I wear my FAVORITE be present Agility yoga pants, people comment. Not only do they look good, they fit well, are long enough in the leg — always a problem — and the shape supports a myriad of body types. Also, they have great yoga pants for guys. I feel for the male students who’ve yet to find the virtues of be present pants; guys usually resort to baggy shorts or sweat pants — be present raises the yoga pant bar immensely. And to close with my constant shout-out to buying with a conscious, be present clothing is made from organic fabrics and produced using environmentally friendly practices.

Friday Favorites - Healing Advice from Dr. Deepak Chopra

We have many new Healing Quest videos at beYOU. In season 2 and 3 of Healing Quest, Dr. Deepak Chopra hosts a segment in which he shares his wisdom. These are great segments because he provides a unique perspective on health and healing. Below are two segments that I found interesting.

Healing Power of Nature

I fell less connected with nature now that I live in NYC; tall buildings, no grass, not a frisbee golf course to be seen! Central Park just isn’t enough nature! As cheesy as this next line is, it’s true. I moved to a new apartment with rooftop access, I didn’t have rooftop access at my old place. Just the simple fact that I can go on my roof and enjoy being outdoors is something I really love. This is my example of how nature can be healing, view this clip to see Dr. Chopra’s advise.

Forgetting to Workout! Not an Option with these Systems…

workout beYOU
OK, we schedule in everything: meetings, anniversaries, parties, drinks with friends, getting the dog groomed… Clearly the list could go on and on! But, what we usually don’t do, or falls from the list first, is our workout. I schedule my yoga classes and other fitness regimes like any other to-do item. And guess what, my workout is prioritized the highest! So if you need a gentle (or not-so-gentle reminder) to get your workout in, consider some of these high-tech solutions:
Hassle Me sends task reminders to your email inbox. (Just don’t delete before heeding!)
Wakerupper sounds the alarm through your cell phone. And lastly, to cover all your high tech reminder bases, Remember the Milk, a web-based task management system keeps you and your life (which includes your workout schedule) in check. Excuse me, my workout is calling.

Michelle
