I wanted to give you a quick update to let you know about some of the great things happening at beYOU.tv.
As you know, our main goal at beYOU.tv is to help you be the best You that you can be. While our videos, (and community features still in development) are the main ways we do that, we have now taken to the airwaves too. Well, the internet waves at least.
Starting January 7th, 2008 join me for beYOU.tv Radio. It will air the first Monday of every month at 2PM PST. We will be broadcast on HealthyLife.net.
HealthyLife.Net is dedicated to providing all-positive radio programs to expand your mind, help your health and lift your spirit - without sensationalism and little controversy. Their mission is to help eliminate fear, advance positive thought & encourage the concept that we are all one - here for the greater good of all.
And we couldn’t agree more!
Here’s the thing, I need your questions! The show will have a question and answer session with both call ins from listeners and questions from the internet. Ever wonder the best time of day to work out? The difference between Tai Chi and Qi Gong? The benefits of hip hop dance? Now’s the time to find out.
Send your questions to info@beyou.tv or just leave a comment on the blog. Either way, I’ll get it. Then listen for the answer on air. I’ll post all the questions and answers here on the blog after the show as well.
It’s all just another step in our plan of total world domination
I look forward to hearing your question.
And remember, Be You - Everyday.

Cardio workouts are a great way to stay in shape, but when the snow starts to fall and the temperature drops how will the cold weather affect your cardio workout routine? When the weather permits, I love to run outdoors. It’s one of my favorite cardio exercises because I can clear my mind, watch the great scenery (NYC) and get a killer workout, but when it’s too cold to run outdoors what should I do? Below is my new winter cardio program. I find it to be very effective and fun! It’s 50 minutes total, 10 minutes of jump rope, 20 minutes of running and 20 minutes of biking - 720 calories burned!

Sometimes we need new workout gear to inspire us. Well, let Nau be the retailer to do so. Nau’s CEO, Chris Van Dyke, son of Dick Van Dyke, has amassed top designers (some from Patagonia), housed it’s headquarters in a green building in Portland, and has a 5% charitable give back program with purchase called the Power of 5. To add to it all, they have a great blog that discusses issues of sustainability and positive change. So let this also inspire you to spend your money where high quality, values and helping others is part of your purchase. Oh yeah, did I mention there stuff looks amazing, too.

This Saturday was the first real attempt at doing some holiday shopping not from my computer — actually venturing into stores. If you think New York City is generally crazy, chaotic and overpopulated, try shopping in a name brand store 2 Saturdays before Christmas. Then once home, weary and frustrated, I found in my mailbox, the answer — The Y Catalog! 10% of what you spend goes to charities really making a difference in the world. Buy a Jade Yoga mat through Y and that 10% goes to Supporting Trees for the Future. Buy your spiritual tunes though Y and those proceeds will go to supporting the American Indian Relief Council.

Seva in Sanskrit, actually means "string" but it is used to describe acts of selfless giving, service through compassion. Go online and see if there’s a cause at the "Y" that speaks to you and shop accordingly. Giving will feel good.
Stay cool and let the games begin!

Aum meditation is increasing in popularity, and once again, one of those things if you hear enough about it you want to try. Luckily enough I’m in a wellness community where I can find more of these esoteric arts. Well, I tried it and it’s amazingly cool, deep, silly, freeing, frightening and ultimately healing. Aum meditation is based on 12 stages of human emotion and "visiting" each stage takes about 15 minutes, so you do the math — this is definitely a 2+ hour commitment. But it’s actually a form of psychotherapy or what the founder Veeresh calls "interpersonal therapy." Veeresh founded Humaniversity whose curriculum is based on the Human Arts — the art of being a human being. Sort of like being a humanities major as we push towards the Aquarian Age. So if you’re looking for a new way to tap in deeply to ultimately break down barriers that keep us down, aum meditation might just be for you.

Say What You Need to Say…do it with a heart wide open. The new song by John Mayer for the upcoming movie the Bucket List. Run to see this movie as soon as it comes out (12/25 in NY and LA, 1/11 nationwide) and gift this song now
to someone you haven’t shared your feeling with, "you better know that
in the end, it’s better to say too much than to never say what you need
to say again — even if your hands are shaking and your faith is
broken..say what you need to say." The song and the movie are both
great reminders to live your life to the fullest, with humor and
compassion.

Make your own Soy Milk at home. You know Martha does it (and you know I will be now too
).
I’ll give you a topic: Santa, too fat to be a role model?
Discuss. "Are there seriously kids going, “Pass the milk and cookies —
I WANT TO BE LIKE SANTA”?" Personally, I think this would be a bit of
a weigh loss curse for Mr. Clause.
Have a healthy Hanukkah - I may be a goyim, but I love me some Latkes, especially when they can be good for me!

Yesterday in class I realized, blissfully and proudly, that more than half my class was bi-weekly regulars who have stayed dedicated to their Tuesday and Saturday classes since June — almost 6 months to the day! And in 6 months, you can definitely achieve strength, memorization of poses and see true changes in your body and mind. One of my students from the 6 month club came up to me and commented proudly how much stronger she’s become. When she started with me, muscles quaked, hips were tight and arms soft. Now she’s strong, confident and nailing chaturanga dandasana like a pro! Another student mentioned how, over the icy weekend we had in New York, she could have truly succumbed to a devastating fall and realized that when she broke her fall she found herself in plank pose! Glad that she’s fine, but pretty amazing realization and showcasing of your bodies ability to protect yourself when you’re strong and centered! For a true strengthening and traditional yoga practice that develops fierceness, I’ve always loved an ashtanga practice, and I particularly like the Primary Series Video by master Richard Freeman.

I know, we all have a bit of the closet hypochondriac in us. It’s human nature. But in this community, where we’re striving for wellness, balance, and fitness — what do we do when we feel not quite right, but aren’t ready to bother a friend or call our doctor or other wellness professional? Well, WebMD has put out the coolest tool - Medical Symptom Checker. This is genius. You pick your sex, scroll over the human form and get information on not just generic health issues, i.e. scroll to the throat and it wants to know if you have a cough. I scrolled over areas where they gave the muscle name and it can "symptom check" for the internal constraint and/or the topical condition (skin issues…) As much as we love the web and can arm chair diagnose, sometimes the Internet can produce some pretty horrific scenarios when we’re not feeling well. Symptom Checker gets my vote for topline, informative, non-hysterical analysis and at home treatments for common (and not-so-common) ailments.
