Robert from Los Angeles asks, “I do tons and tons of cardio, but I am still not losing weight? What am I doing wrong?

The thing that most people don’t realize about workingout is that more than half of it is about what you eat, not just what you do. Eating right is a crucial part of any workout routine. A proper diet will:

1) Jump start and keep your metabolism going
2) Fuel your body for better workouts
3) Maintain blood sugar levels at a place where you have more energy

Ask yourself, “What do I eat for breakfast?” Do you have a healthy snack before lunch or mid-afternoon?

Try to eat five small meals a day instead of three larger ones.

Breakfast – Avoid complex starch carbs.
Snack – Try a yogurt or a piece of fruit (avoid high sugar yogurt, buy plain yogurt and add a teaspoon of your favorite jam, it will still be half the added sugar)
Lunch – Include some protein and greens
Snack – Grab some almonds
Dinner – Eat some protein - a piece of fish is great

As for your actual cardio routine, watch your form. Fitness expert Scott Cole suggests you “ease into your own power.” This allows you to get a better range of motion and work deeper into your muscles. Adding a stretching component to your workout, like Tai Chi or yoga, will help you to do this as well.

Also, be sure to add some type of strength training to your routine. It takes your body more energy to burn muscle than fat.

Taking this multi dimensional approach – cardio, weights and stretching - will help you see the results you are seeking.

Ashley from Chicago says “I have a question: I was wondering, what is the best way to work on love handles and the "hippy" part of your body. Also, do you prefer the high protein low carb diet for weight loss or a more balanced approach?”

This is a great question Ashley, because it sheds a spot light on a big workout myth.

You can not spot train!

To see the results you are looking for, you need to work multiple parts of your body at the same time. Scott Cole tells us that in preparing for his “Best Abs on Earth” video with Tom Seabourne, they examined the best bodies on Earth to see what works best. These included dancers, competitive athletes and martial artists. Working deep from their core with wide range of motion to reach multiple muscles parts is what they all have in common. They also connect the mind to core, so you really feel it in your gut.

Regarding high protein low carb diet question, it’s really more about the source of your carbs, proteins and fats.

When choosing carbs, stay away from white grain starches like bagels, processed food or high fructose corn syrup. Reach for sprouted grains, beans or oats/oatmeal instead.

Also, don’t deprive your body of fat. It may make your body think you are starving yourself and thus shut down. Foods like almonds, avocados or salmon (in moderation), are good sources of fat. Remember to avoid saturated fats.

Try these tips, Ashley, and you should start to notice smaller hips soon!

Santa to fat to be a role model?

America’s top doc told the Herald yesterday that Santa Claus should slim down, in the latest blow struck in a global politically correct crusade against the jolly fat man.

“It is really important that the people who kids look up to as role models are in good shape, eating well and getting exercise. It is absolutely critical,” acting U.S. Surgeon General Rear Adm. Steven K. Galson said in an interview after a presentation on obesity at the Boston Children’s Museum.

And so surfaces another fitness gadget. Swirlnet, a company around for a good part of 2007, is getting ready to show off at CES a new version of its Swirl product. This one is called the Swirl MX.
The Swirl MX is designed to work with Swirlfit, the online companion of the fitness device, to help you “create your own heart rate zone training programs and intensity-match them to your favorite music.” The product itself is described as a 1oz heart rate monitor, music player and virtual personal trainer which “guide you so you stay in target training zones throughout your workout” by offering real-time voice coaching.
The MX is plugged into your computer and you download the workout you’ve created to it as well as a play list of music. The device, in its heart rate monitor capacity, records workout data so you can upload it later to track your progress. It prices at around $150 with three months of online service included.
