Composting in the City… Green Made Easy with NatureMill

indoor composterI’m a yogini that gets appliance and gadget envy easily. (Remember my post on the high tech toothbrush by Ultreo…) But in true yogi tradition of moderation, when I find a new technological wonder it has been researched, reviewed, price compared, day dreamed about to the point where friends and family shout, “Buy it already…” Well I’m about to go there, folks. The new under the counter composter by NatureMill is incredible. I know — composting involves worms, odors and is what hard-core environmentalist do for fun. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Enter NatureMill’s products. These under the counter composters are easy, efficient, no worms, bugs or odor. And why would we do this? The reason why we compost, quite simply, is that it’s the most efficient way to take our day-to-day waste and incorporate it back to the earth. (more…)

Additional Sweetener Info — The Stevia Factor

Additional Sweetener Info The Stevia FactorIn keeping with our model of fully informing our readers as much as we can, when I wrote about sweetener alternatives yesterday, I mentioned that I would circle back and fill you in on Stevia, the herbal based sweetener. Since yesterday’s piece was about natural, whole sweeteners — agave, honey, raw unrefined cane sugar — Stevia does come from a plant source, but according to the FDA, it is classified as a dietary supplement. Well, after some of my recent posts on the FDA, you know I’ve been outspoken on a few topics — mainly having to do with cows — but maybe the supplement classification has been due to some negative press on Stevia as well. Sweet Alternatives — Healthier Options to White Sugar and Saccharine

Sweet Alternatives Healthier Options to White Sugar and SaccharineAfter I wrote my post on the study citing the potential of fake sugars (saccharine) making you gain weight and not help lose or maintain weight, my friends started subtly asking me what other options are there. Maybe they didn’t want to leave a comment owning up to a Sweet & Lo or Diet Coke addiction, so I thought I’d do a follow-up post. Bob gave us the wonderful alternative sweeter, agave, but there are many other tasty options to explore.

Since we did mention agave, check out rawagave.com as a source. (more…)

Going Green — Small Steps Can Make a Big Difference in Your Health and Home

Going Green Small Steps Can Make a Big Difference in Your Health and HomeIf you’re trying to go completely green or just make small green changes, sometimes it can feel a bit overwhelming. I know that when I started making changes it did, but I found breaking my “greening” into 3 distinct categories made a huge difference. I broke the categories into: food (what I ingest); body (hygiene and cosmetics); and home (cleaning products and recycling). Just writing that out makes me feel more organized.

FDA Beef Recall — Why Do Our School Kids get Less than Sub-Prime Food?

FDA Beef Recall Why Do Our School Kids get Less than Sub-Prime Food? Now that we’ve settled into the initial shock of witnessing the Nation’s largest food recall in her history, and the world has turned it’s attentions to Fidel Castro’s resignation, my focus has now shifted to where this meat went and why there are no checks and balances to the point where 143 million tons of unfit food gets out into the marketplace, and most shockingly, into the public school system.

The meat that was recalled was part of a variety of meats provided through the USDA’s National School Lunch Program (NSLP) which keeps prices low and the meat in question was primarily used by schools, according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service. (more…)

FITMOMs Feel Better Eight years ago, as a single mom pregnant with my first child, I gave up the one thing that keeps me grounded – my active lifestyle. Fitness fell to the side during that pregnancy partially because of the misinformation given to me by my caregiver. I didn’t feel the consequences right away, but when I was eight months pregnant, I began to realize my pregnancy was out of control!

A 60 pound weight gain and pregnancy-induced hypertension, which actually go hand and hand, had set in. This led to a premature delivery, which led to breastfeeding issues, which led to postpartum depression.
