Acupuncture for Weight Loss
As far as my experience has taught me regarding acupuncture’s efficacy in the treatment of weight loss, the jury is still out. This may come as a disappointment to those who are on a quest for the next best thing in weight loss and were hoping acupuncture was the answer. It can, however, help curve your cravings, which can lead to a healthier diet.
I am sure a vast majority of my colleagues and peers will chide me for being so blunt, but acupuncture is not a method I recommend for slimming endeavors. If any acupuncturists try to convince you they have the secret method to weight loss, be very skeptical. I think they are trying to profit from your good intentions.
Acupuncture is, however, very effective in treating the vast array of digestive disorders from which people across the country suffer. Including, but not limited to, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, nausea, stomach aches, gastric ulcers, reflux, and the list goes on. I have also found clinically acupuncture can be immensely helpful in aiding individuals with food addictions. Whether you are a sugar fiend or an over-eater, acupuncture is certainly therapeutically beneficial in helping to curb those cravings. And if you lay off the some of the snacks, you just might loose those pounds you are looking to shed!

I have had the same experience. Acupuncture can do wonders for many kinds of digestive problems, but it can’t take the excess calories out of your body if you eat too many. A number of patients have told me that the “hunger” point on the ear helped them, but I don’t make a habit out of offering acupuncture as a weight loss tool.
Hi! I actually wrote a book about this called, “Chinese Medicine & Healthy Weight Managment; an Evidence-based Integrated Approach”. In my book I discuss the truth about how acupuncture can help based research and my clinical experience. While acupuncture is not a magic bullet, it will help patients lose 8-10% baseline body weight and as with all weight loss programs the patient must be proactive in keeping the weight off. I counsel all patients on diet, excercise and lifestyle change. Best of luck to all of you trying lose weight!
