A Greener Easter and Happy Spring
Spring is definitely the time of renewal. Our thoughts drift to being and doing more outside, warmth, flowers and love. Spring comes and the need to clean, refurbish, detox and generally be a better YOU comes naturally. Spring officially arrived yesterday, March 20th, marked by the Spring Equinox. This is the day when there are exactly 12 hours of light and darkness. From this day on, the sun will continue to climb higher in the sky inching its way to summer. And whether or not you observe Easter religiously, the holiday definitely symbolizes the start of Spring. In the Christian religion, Easter celebrates the rebirth of Christ. But in Pagan cultures of yore, the holiday celebrates the return of spring and the balance between light and dark. So in honoring all, and in keeping with my “green” platform — here are some ways to keep your Easter Green — truly honoring spring and the environment.
1.) Use real eggs not plastic: Where do those little plastic eggs go? The joy of Easter for us as kids was coloring Easter eggs. Maybe it was more work for Mom, but she seemed to like it. Check out The Green Guide for a list of natural dyes. Also use organic eggs this year! You can find Pete and Gerry’s brand in most super markets.
2.) Buy organic and free trade chocolate: Support Fair Trade Chocolate. It’s never too early to teach your children about empowering small, independent farmers. And - organic chocolate simply tastes better!
3.) No more plastic baskets: Go to a thrift store and purchase straw baskets, or make a family project out of it by making your own baskets. Unless you recycle plastic baskets year-to-year, a natural fiber would be best. Same goes for the plastic astro-turf like grass. You can use shredded paper.
4.) Select organic meats: If you are having a traditional Easter or Spring meal featuring a ham or a leg of lamb, try Heritage Foods amazing selection of organic, free-range and humanely raised meats. They produce some of the tastiest meats out there. For a greater variety of organic products (not just meat), check out Local Harvest. I site them often as they are just a great resource.
Happy Spring!

Ms Barge,
I had to take a look at your blog. Lots of interesting things are being discussed here. I hope you think about the motivational speaking, I think you would be wonderful at that as well. Your writing style is as impressive as your vocabulary. I sense that the “force is strong with you”…(smile). I wish you much continued success
