Eco-Travel Destinations: Paradise Found (Part 2)
The second and final part of this eco-travel series takes us further away from mainland USA and North America. If you’ve got more time on your hands, have been saving for a truly exotic getaway and want the destination to be as green as possible, you’re in luck. Some of the most pristine eco-travel destinations can be found in Africa, Asia and Southeast Asia. Let’s take a look.
AFRICA
Ah the motherland! Africa is a vast continent that has been known to change lives. But she is indeed vast. Do your research and check the U.S Department of State’s Travel Warningssection of their site before picking your dream spot in any far-off region. But once the background check is done, the potential destinations are incredible.
South Africa
Sabi Sabi is a private reserve in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. The park’s reason for being is ecological conservation at its highest — from wastewater disposal to indigenous plant and animal preservation. If you’re seeking a luxury safari that respects the wildlife and their surroundings, this is your spot.
Japan
Japan already conjures up the color green for me, yet would have not come top of mind for an eco-friendly destination, but pristine and peaceful come to mind when describing Eco Lodge Shimanto in Kochi-Ken. This hotel collects their own rainwater and harvests shrimp and crab from a nearby protected river source. Ecotel is a line of environmentally sensitive hotels around the world. Their website could use some overhauling and allow their visuals to meet their hotel standards, but if traveling to Japan, this hotel should not be missed.
Bali
Panchoran Retreat is truly the nature lovers getaway. Explore traditional Balinese villages via bicyles and tour terraced rice paddies with local anthropologists. Hike nearby volcanoes and marvel at the native flora and fauna that seemingly grows dense and blanket-like over the entire island. To throw in some formal green education on your trip, stop by Garland’s Environmental Bamboo Foundation, a non-profit located on the property that teaches the benefits of sustainable bamboo construction.
Also when flying such a distance, and in keeping with your green vacation, why not consider flying on airlines that are actively pursuing ways to offset passenger emissions for air travel. British Airways has partnered with eco-centered company Climate Care. Other airlines including Air Canada, Cathay Pacific, Delta, SAS, and Virgin Blue.
