Exercise More by Moving to the City
Going green does not necessarily equate to healthy living. According to a recent study performed by the Nivel Institute, people who live in green areas – more rural settings – walk less than people who live in urban areas – about 60% less. People living in green areas walked an average of 180 minutes per week, compared to 250 minutes per week with people living in urban areas. That’s a difference of about an hour each week.
One possible explanation may be that cars are less needed in urban areas than they are in areas where stores, schools, etc. are further apart. Living near green areas also made no difference on the general fitness level of the population, according to the results of a survey of about 5,000 residents living across the Netherlands.
If you live in a more urban area, let this study inspire you. The next time you need to pick up a few small items from the store, walk or bike instead of taking the car. Heck, with the current state of gas prices, you’d be better off anyway. Be physically, environmentally and financially healthy – walk that walk!
