Summer has come and gone, and with it, so has many peoples’ primary motivation for working out - vanity. So many of us begin in the spring with hopes of achieving our dreams of having a beach body - looking ultra hot in a bikini or showing off a chiseled six pack. I am really not sure what motivational goals people set in the fall, unless they are gearing up for next summer, which brings up an interesting fitness topic - what keeps people motivated? I don’t know about you, but I have always been a big Wu-Tang Clan fan. As such, I was awestruck about a year ago when I saw a story on tv about a new sport called chess boxing (Wu-Tang has a track on their first album called Da Mystery of Chessboxin. The title is a reference to an old kung fu film where a student learns the strategic correlation between chess and kung fu.) (more…)
4,000 women ran in the New York Mini, a 10k race. The winning time of 32 minutes and 43 seconds was the slowest time recorded in ten years.
The Eagle Man Half Ironman had 1,400 participants who competed in a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run. Recorded times were slower than normal. In another event, the Philadelphia International Championship, a 156 mile bike race, half of the competitors dropped out. In this race, the winning time of 6:14:47 was about 30 minutes slower than last year’s race. Are athletes for some reason in worse shape now than they were as recently as a year ago? Is there some mysterious force which is preventing them from performing optimally? (more…)

As a yoga teacher in New York City, I teach a cross-section of people at various levels of fitness, yoga and other sports. However, a majority of my New York yogis are also runners. New York has a lot of runners: maybe it’s Central Park, maybe it’s the high level of stress in this city, maybe - like yoga - you don’t need a lot of money or stuff to do it — just grab your running shoes and hit the pavement. But all that running and hitting the pavement has taken a toll on a lot of my students who run and do yoga. Chief and often serious complaints are: tight hamstrings and tight hip flexors. So I’ve come up with a series of super quick poses geared to the runner, but that anyone can do to release tension in the hamstrings, hip flexors and glutes. (more…)
