When my favorite coffee shop added rice milk to its ever growing thermoses to choose from, my thoughts turned to: if there are so many dairy and dairy substitutes out there, am I ingesting the one that’s best for me? In general, I’m not a dairy seeker. I generally have organic, hormone and antibiotic free whole milk. I have greek yogurt several times a week and will indulge in organic ice cream now and again. Every morning I start my day with a blended smoothie of some sort. Though I’m not much for caffeine, there’s definitely days where I need that extra pick me up. I’ll make sure to couple caffeine with Maca for Maca’s ability to rebuild my adrenals.

If you’re not familiar with Alice Waters - investigate! Waters founded the famed Chez Panisse in Berkeley, CA in 1971 — a neighborhood bistro that paid homage to her food ethics: eat locally, seasonally and shop at farmers’ markets. This has been her credo long before all things got green. I was lucky enough to go to Chez Panisse in 1991 — great food experiences make for instant date recall — on the arm of a devoted Northern Californian foodie. His Mom was good friends with Alice and their family regularly ate there. (more…)
When I was asked to write about the Master Cleanse program, I was excited as many in my wellness and yoga community had and have done it on a regular basis. But interestingly enough, I personally have never done a liquid only, multi-day fast. Dr. Steven Pratt came out with a book SuperFoods Rx: Fourteen Foods that Will Change your Life awhile back. But when the book came out, it was at the same time that others were hitting the shelves extolling the virtues of salmon, yogurt and blueberries — namely Dr. Perricone’s famous anti-inflammatory skin diet. I checked them all out, yet at the time it felt like a fad. But in my ongoing quest to strive to ingest only whole foods and foods that actually nourish and help, I revisited Dr. Pratt’s book.
His book is still a great resource. He outlines with medical backing why each one of his SuperFoods - is well, super - and also includes recipes created by Golden Door’s chef, Michel Stroot. Here’s Dr. Pratt’s SuperFoods list: (more…)

So, how did the drugs get into the water supplies? According to the reports, when people take the drugs, the body only absorbs what is needed, then the rest is flushed out or the system and down the toilet. Problem is, according to the study, water treatment plants aren’t designed to remove pharmaceutical residues, so they stay in the water. (more…)
Caffeine is extremely present in our instant fix society today. There are places (Astor Place in New York) where you can literally see, without turning your head, two or more Starbucks or other cafes. Nearly 52% of Americans over 18 years of age drink coffee every day.
Caffeine can creep into our diets in other ways too. Caffeine is a popular additive in weight loss pills. With all this caffeine around us, do we really know how it affects our bodies?
