Missed a post or just catching up from a long week? We’ll make it easy for you. Just read our weekly round up and you’ll be up to speed in the click of a mouse.
To breastfeed or to breastfeed - either way, make sure it’s your decision. Don’t listen to the Breastfeeding Bullies.
You see them in movies, magazines, billboards and on celebrities. I’m talking about six pack abs. How do you get and maintain a flat, great looking mid-section? Good lighting and photo retouching certainly helps; that’s for sure. I can’t overstate the importance of good nutrition in helping shape your mid-section. Nutrition is about half the equation.
If you’re looking to build a strong core and a tight torso, here are two videos that I’ve been doing and seeing great results. Men’s Health may not be calling quite yet for a cover shot, but it’s only a matter of time.
2007 has been a very big year indeed! beYOU.tv launched, with the goal of helping others in mind. We want to help you develop new skills, a new workout routine and overall wellness. The best is yet to come!
Great in 2008
2008 will be bigger than 2007! We currently have two exciting developments to announce: a new radio show and a new community section.
Starting January 7th, 2008, beYOU.tv will host our own radio show on HealthyLife.net. For more information click here (scroll half way down, or search for "Bob Kasunic"). If you have any questions that you’d like to be answered on air or suggestions please send your thoughts via the feedback link on http://www.beYOU.tv.
Our new community section is going to be awesome, I’m looking forward to it the most! Similar to other social networks, you will be able to fill-out a profile. This is great for gyms (locations) and instructors (professionals) because they can advertise for free.
The way you gather information from our community section is what will set it apart. We are implementing a pull style information system, I like to think of this as a reverse search. Instead of you looking for information, the information you want comes to you - cool huh?
In our community section, you’ll be able to track or follow a location, professional, user or idea. For example, I could track East West Yoga, a Yoga studio in NYC. Whenever East West Yoga updates their profile, I will receive a notice online, on my phone or through email! Last week East West hosted an open house (free Yoga). Once our community section is up, East West could put that information on their profile, then I’d be notified - the reverse search.
Here’s another great example: tracking ideas. In the new community section I’ll be able to track ideas or phrases, such as "free pilates". Now, whenever someone updates their profile with "free pilates", I’ll be notified. I could go to all the free pilates events in New York!
As you can see, I’m excited about the new community section. Now all we have to do is build it!
To close out the year, I’d like to highlight my two favorite Friday Favorite posts.
We have many new Healing Quest videos at beYOU. In season 2 and 3 of Healing Quest, Dr. Deepak Chopra hosts a segment in which he shares his wisdom. These are great segments because he provides a unique perspective on health and healing. Below are two segments that I found interesting.
I fell less connected with nature now that I live in NYC; tall buildings, no grass, not a frisbee golf course to be seen! Central Park just isn’t enough nature! As cheesy as this next line is, it’s true. I moved to a new apartment with rooftop access, I didn’t have rooftop access at my old place. Just the simple fact that I can go on my roof and enjoy being outdoors is something I really love. This is my example of how nature can be healing, view this clip to see Dr. Chopra’s advise.
You may have noticed all of the new Healing Quest videos I’ve been adding. Soon, we will have three seasons worth available for you at beYOU.tv! Healing Quest is an excellent series that explores holistic and alternative medicine/healing techniques. I’ve found two great tips that I want to share with you.
We’ve all heard about antioxidants and free radicals. In short, free radicals are a by-product produced by the mitochondria in our cells. Young bodies do an efficient job of neutralizing free radicals, but as we age our bodies produce more free radicals, which leads to cell damage. Healing Quest visits scientists in Denver who have created a new pill that helps the body fight free radicals.
Eating the proper foods is extremely important to overall health, but it is also difficult to do. Which foods should you eat? How can you tell if they contain the nutrients you need? In this episode of Healing Quest, they examine this issue and provide a simple solution: eat colorful food.
Manhattan isn’t a large island, yet it’s packed with people. People who live here, from other parts of NYC and other parts of the entire world all cram onto this tiny space! Not only is Manhattan hectic, but we are in the middle of the Holiday Season - a time of the year that can be especially stressful. How is one suppose to remain sane? I’ve got the solution and it involves changes outside and within.
Aside from the changing weather, I can always tell when cold and flu season is approaching. I’m usually down 2-3 players in my fantasy football league due to injuries and people on the street start coughing and sneezing.
With Adrian Peterson’s and Larry Jonson’s injuries and the coughing/sneezing crowds on the streets of NYC, it’s officially the beginning of the cold and flu season. Like most people, I hate being sick.
This week I want to highlight Gary Null’s entire Seven Steps to Total Health series because it help you avoid a cold and the flu! Step 5 stands out the most, with the grocery shopping segment:
It’s Friday again and you know what that means - Friday Favorites! You spoke and we listened, beYOU.tv has lots of new Pilates and Tai Chi videos for you. In this Friday Favorites, I’ll highlight two of my favorite videos and give you the links to the rest. If you’re looking for more info on Pilates, check out my previous post Friday Favorites - Pilates and Yoga - What’s the Difference?
Pilates Plus takes the Pilates method for a spin. You will find many of the traditional Pilates Method techniques, but in Pilates Plus there is a strong focus on the exercise band and exercise ball. Introducing this equipment is a great way to increase resistance, which is used to tone and build muscle. Remember, for every pound of muscle you gain, your body will burn an extra 50 calories per day.
Yoga and Pilates are the hottest topics in Fitness. You’ve probably taken a class or two of each. Maybe you own a Yoga mat or a Pilates ball, but what’s the difference between Yoga and Pilates?
I’ve been a fitness-buff for many years now and I’ve practiced Yoga and Pilates. Now that I work at beYOU.tv, I watch a lot of Yoga and Pilates videos! Based on this experience, I’d like to share my knowledge on these two fitness activities and highlight their differences.
History
Yoga is old, really old! According to Wikipeida, "Several seals discovered at Indus Valley Civilization (c. 3300–1700 BC) sites depict figures in a yoga or meditation like posture." Yoga is as much a physical experience as it is a spiritual one. Yoga blends the physical (postures) with the spirit (meditation) in an effort to reach enlightenment.
Pilates, however, is much, much younger! Pilates (also known as "The Pilates Method") was created by Joseph Pilates during the First World War (1914) to improve the rehabilitation program for the returning veterans. Pilates is purely a physical activity, it is not designed to affect your spirit (although you’ll feel good afterwards).
Practice
In daily practice, especially in the West, the main difference between Yoga and Pilates is precision. Yoga’s goal (enlightenment) is ambiguous. Enlightenment is different for everyone, thus each persons’ yoga practice will be different (not precise) to reach this goal.
The goal of Pilates is specific: improve a muscle or gain strength, ect. For example, I practice Pilates to strengthen my core. This is accomplished through precise and meticulous exercise. Crunch this, raise that and hold, then release and repeat! Our bodies are more similar than our spirits. This is how Pilates and Yoga differ. Pilates focuses solely on the body, while Yoga focuses on the body and spirit!
The Evidence
Don’t take my word for it, check out these videos to see the difference between Yoga and Pilates for yourself.
Come and experience a Joseph Pilates inspired teaching with this thoroughly enjoyable video. Pilates Inspired Matwork - Progressive will help you attain well-toned muscles and core strength.
"Ashtanga Yoga allows the body itself to become the ground for enlightenment," teaches Richard Freeman. With Ashtanga Yoga, The Primary Series, you will learn the core practices of this challenging, fulfilling path - a precise union of breath, alignment and flowing sequence of postures.
Know that you know the difference between Pilates and Yoga, spread the word - check out beYOU.tv’s embeddable player!
