No gym equipment is necessary when it comes to Kim Kardashian’s latest home workout remedy. All it involves is a chair or a couch. She says to, “act as if you are going to sit down but don’t actually sit! Just lightly touch your booty on it and come back up. Do that seven times! Then do the same thing but this time only half way, come back up and do that seven times.”

Although I typically write about exercise issues that affect mainly women, this piece speaks to anyone trying to stay fit and stick to a work out routine. Recently, I stumbled upon new and exciting research* about exercise intensity and its implications for sticking with a fitness routine. (I’m a Ph.D., we tend to find new studies fascinating). These curious researchers wanted to know why people who start to exercise, and often say that exercising makes them feel better, still drop out within only a few months.

If you were a fitness instructor, would you be willing to pay a $500 fee to teach your class in public parks? Could you even afford it? A new proposed fitness fee in Austin, TX does just that.
The argument goes like this, vendors and others who run private establishments in public parks have to pay the fee, so why not fitness instructors? Since a fitness class is a private establishment, they should pay the fee as well. On the other hand… (more…)
During my first pregnancy, I was a sluggish mess validated by all of the excuses and inaccurate information I could get my hands on. As I mentioned before, my preterm baby was born as a result of hypertension (linked to excessive weight gain, mine to the tune of 60 pounds) and preterm rupture of membranes (linked to hypertension). An unhealthy mom, I knew, couldn’t mean a healthy baby.
With a background in fitness, I should have known better — and did. But instead, I held dearly to my right to put my feet up and be lazy. Let’s just say it didn’t pay off and created a long list of regrets that inspired me to change my ways. (more…)
