Workouts Safely in the HeatThe heatwave in NYC snapped last week, but it’s still pretty hot outside and it won’t be cooler for a while. No matter where you live though, summer is here, with all its heat and humidity. Feel The Runners’ Burn

Feel The Runners' BurnSpring has sprung in NYC. This means outdoor running for me. It’s one of my favorite exercises and I consider it fundamental to any exercise routine. Last weekend I went out for a 5 mile run, everything was great including the weather and the view. After my run, I did a little cool down walking and stretched. I felt good and continued on with my day. I woke up the next morning feeling fine, but this got me thinking…

When Exercising - Everything Counts: Part II

When Exercising - Everything Counts: Part II Yesterday, we began by asking some question regarding exercise, specifically, “How much is enough?” “Do I need 20 consecutive minutes? Or 30 or 40?” “What if I don’t have a full half-hour to spare that day?” From a motivational perspective, there are compelling reasons to tell Americans, especially women, that in actuality, “everything counts.” We live extremely busy lives, often with back-to-back appointments. On top of that, women often juggle multiple roles and responsibilities. Even in dual income homes, women are still primarily responsible for home-related tasks. So, in general, women have even less leisure time than men. (more…)

When Exercising - Everything Counts!

When Exercising - Everything Counts! The fitness industry and exercise “experts” have given us very different, and often conflicting, messages about how often and how intensely we need to workout. “At least 20 minutes of cardio, 3x /week for cardio vascular health,” or “Four times a week for an hour to maintain your weight, five times/week to loose.” So, it is no wonder that I’m frequently asked by many women, “how much is exercise is enough?”

Years ago, the prevailing belief about exercise was that we had to “do it ’til it burns” and “no pain, no gain”.

A Dog to Keep you Fit & Happy

A Dog to Keep you Fit HappyThe other day I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen in almost a year. New York City is a place with a lot of people, but when you see a dear familiar face in the crowd, it’s always a great feeling. When I saw this person, my immediate response was how much weight she had lost. Being in the fitness industry, I know what a struggle it is for people to lose weight and keep it off in a healthy way. Well her answer was simple — she got a dog! When I talk to people about maintaining their weight and healthy habits, the one thing I hear over and over is consistency. There are people who think of exercising as akin to brushing their teeth or paying their bills. It is simply a way of life. (more…)
